Is your Semi Winter-Ready?

Heavy Trucks, On the Road | September 16, 2019

Fall is right around the corner and it is a great time to get started on that winterizing checklist. Here are a few reminders to keep in mind as you get started on your fall maintenance.

Check your coolant systems

Pressure test your truck’s anti-freeze system on a cold engine to make sure it’s at 15-18psi once you’ve turned on the heater control valves. Make sure your radiator cap is tested at a minimum pressure of 5 psi. Lastly, check your hoses – heater and water – for hardening or softening, wear, cracks and tighten any loose clamps. Make sure you’re including an inspection of your exhaust pipes and replacing any broken clamps.

Clean and/or replace filters as needed.

Be sure to have spares on-hand while traveling.

  • Air filters
  • Coolant filters
  • Fuel filters
  • DOC and DPF filters
  • DEF dosing screen filter and in-line filter

Treat your diesel.

The last thing you need is your diesel to gel. Be sure to add an anti-gel in your fuel take before fueling up. Be sure to carry extra anti-gel additives with you while traveling as demand during severe weather may make it difficult to find.

Check all electrical connections.

Be sure you’re inspecting all routing connections to the engine, after treatment and the power of the truck. Make sure you’re also checking the battery charge status. While you’re checking the electrical connections to your engine, be sure to inspect your engine belts as well.

Once you have your truck maintenance list checked off be sure to add a few must-have items to stock-up on before bad weather hits.

  • Chaining equipment
  • Bungees
  • Waterproof gloves and boots with good traction
  • Reflective vest, flashlights, and batteries
  • Spare clothes and extra warm bedding
